The last time the Pittsburgh Steelers appeared in the Superbowl  was  during the 1995-1996 season. They lost to the mighty Dallas Cowboys 27-17 which served as a glorious beginning to the tradition of the Varsano Superbowl Party. Now, a decade later coach Bill Cowher returns to the Superbowl to try to recapture the dominance of the Steelers of the 1970s. Big Ben, The Bus and all those Terrible Towels sure are traveling well this postseason. At 23, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be the second-youngest Super Bowl starter ever (behind Dan Marino). Jerome Bettis will be back to his hometown of Detroit for his first Superbowl in his long and storied career. The Steelers became the first team to win three away games to make it to the Super Bowl since the 1985 New England Patriots.
The upstart Steelers are the first No. 6 seed to ever play for the Vince Lombardi Trophy, while the Seahawks are making their first-ever Super Bowl appearance. This will be Mike Holmgren's third trip to the Super Bowl, where he was 1-1 as head coach of the Packers. Two  Somoan-American former-USC standouts head their respective defenses, Lofa Tatupu for the Seahawks and Troy Polamalu for the Steelers. Seattle's offense is led by Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who was benched early in his Seattle tenure, but overcame early doubts about being a starting quarterback. Shaun Alexander, the league's MVP, came back from a concussion he suffered last week to rush for a team playoff-record 132 yards and two touchdowns. The Seahawks are underdogs to the AFC's sixth seed.
